reflections

Our school is well into the new school year.  In fact, our first quarter is wrapping up this week.  Reflecting back on it, I can't help but feel more frustrated than anything else.  We began school back on August 18 because of a harvest break we give the students to help with our local harvest in September.  That means we're in school for a month then take 2 weeks off.  This would be great, and normally I have no problem with it, but this year seems to have been anything but seamless.

The second week we were in school we had a 3 day program visit our school, which interrupted our class schedules for a good part of the week.  We then had a test to administer to our students to measure their academic progress, which took another 3 days.  Then we had our 2 week break.  Once we returned we had 2 weeks with only 4 days because of a workshop one week and a holiday the next.  THEN, we had to administer the standardized test, which took an entire week, and is now running into a second week just for make ups.

CHEMERGY: Chemistry and Science Clubbing in Synergy

And I thought it was Science Clubbing: A Strategic Contingency for Survival. And I really think it should be that way (well personally, I think this one’s for like for the elementary levels). I saw the above theme of Science Clubbing month in an Elementary school here in Naga, and I couldn’t ascertain even with the help of the net which one’s the real theme, so here, I’ll just write something abut it.
One of the most hated subjects in both high school and college is Chemistry and it has proven itself to become more and more forgettable and hard to understand with each one’s advancement in the academic ladder. It has dumbfounded even the brightest minds I’ve come to personally know, and it possesses to some extent this shroud of mystery which no one seems able or at least interested to crack. But why has chemistry become such a feared and alienated field? And is this fear and alienation good for us in the end?
One possible reason why many people cannot grasp the basics of chemistry is the fact that this field of knowledge uses an almost entirely different kind of language. Math uses numbers, and all others use letters and words, but chemistry — oh, Chemistry — uses an incomprehensible mixture of these, woven into complex patterns almost to the point of irrationality. Well, that’s how I felt when chemistry and I first met.
But in reality, Chemistry is not something to be feared. It is one of the most enjoyable subjects there can be. I credit this love of chemistry to a high school teacher of mine, Sir Jestoni Daza, who really put his all into teaching us the basics of chemistry – especially the harder ones, like nomenclature, balancing, etc. Once you get your hands on it, I tell you you can’t take them away.
But falling in love with chemistry is no easy thing. It takes determination and real, ardent desire to learn. I admit it, not everybody can love chemistry as it is. So what now? Do we just resort back to the old attitude towards chemistry? Of course not.
What we need is to incorporate it with something enjoyed by people at a stage when their minds are very flexible, malleable, and ductile. This stage I’m talking about is childhood. And what activity (besides play) do kids like more than being with each other? So there you have it: a harmony between chemistry and science clubbing among kids. Or as the theme puts it, CHEMERGY.
By synergy, it is meant that together, chemistry and science clubbing can do something that they cannot do when they’re separate. And this something, I believe, is changing the world. But how? Chemistry is one field in science that’s very useful in almost all fields of development. We need a thorough understanding of chemistry if we are to make significant advancements in Agriculture and Aquaculture, Biology, Medicine, Forestry, Environmental Conservation, and a host of other endeavors. Chemistry is the language of our development

my modern hero

A hero can be more than just a monster-slayer or a lifesaver. A hero can be anyone who has a positive influence on another. For me, my father has affected my life in a positive way. I look up to him, and he is my hero and role model. My connection to him is that he is my father. He is a mechanical engineer, who currently works for Parker Aerospace Group. He received his bachelor’s degree from Kettering University and a master’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University. He grew up in Michigan, and lived there for 34 years. He has worked all over the United States and overseas.

Ordinary people can be courageous in different ways than epic heroes, such as Odysseus. Courage can be shown through taking risks. My father has taken career risks. He moved his family to southern Texas, so he could get more opportunities in the auto industry. He actually worked in Mexico. The risk was moving his family to a new place and working with a new culture. After working 25 years, he took a more stable job at a new company, to make sure his family would be able to have a consistent income. As said by my father, “Sometimes you have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone and take risks to see what you are truly capable of.” These risks also affected his family, although he took those risks because of them. His family had to move twice to places with no relatives or friends. He also travels a lot; however, he makes time for his family.

my teacher my hero

My Teacher, My Hero

There are countless definitions of heroes in our world today. Is it a superstar who used his fame and fortune to help the needy in his hometown? Is it a firefighter who sees no danger in all circumstances just to save lives of people? Is it an Overseas Filipino Worker who is ready to bear the pain of being alone just to provide his family a comfortable life? Or is it a mom who has to work two jobs to support her children and still make them feel the love they need? But what really makes a person a hero?
Behind these great people are strong foundations that guide and develop them all throughout. Education is one of the greatest gift mankind can ever receive. It is vital to anybody. The role played by teachers becomes very significant since they are considered as one of the nation builders. On him rests the failure or the success of the nation.
The influence of the teacher is very immense and no one knows when this influence becomes visible. Since the teacher serves as the second parent of a child, he should have the qualities of a role model person. From the simple ABC and 123 to keeping the surroundings always clean are learned from the Kindergarten teachers which are still applicable today. These knowledge, attitudes, values and behavior bring out good and responsible citizens.
The teacher measures the achievements and aspirations of the nation. The teacher is a dynamic force that motivates everyone to become a responsible, productive citizen. The teacher is the backbone of the community. SACRIFICE, DETERMINATION, COURAGE, DEDICATION, SELFLESS, PERSEVERANCE – these are the common qualities attributed to a hero. After reading this essay, when do you consider a person a hero?
my teacher is really my hero!!!!

breastfeeding

Bottle feeding in the US has become the social norm. Today more women are working outside the home and forumla feeding seems to be faster and more flexible, and a hostility towards breastfeeding has been adapted. Those who choose to breast feed are looked down upon, and more often than not, breast feeding in public is not an option for them. Although it is seldom, women are even seen in the news for causing negative reaction to breastfeeding in public. But why?

The breast has become sexual symbol. People view the breast as erotic and women and are usually viewed through the neverending desire of men. This has implanted the idea that women's breasts exist soley for the purpose of pleasure to others, and not for the purpose of providing nurishment to their young. When people see a women breastfeeding, their reaction is usually ackwardness and distaste because our society has accepted the idea that the breast is sexual and not reproductive.

This trend in not using the female breast as infant nourishment needs to be reversed. It has been thought that formula is nutritionally equal to breast milk and has been endorsed by the Pediatric community sence the 1950's, but this is not the case. There are several reasons why breast milk is healthier. Breastmilk contains over four-hundred nutrients that cannot be recreated in a laboratory. These nutrients are essential to the healthy production and growth of babies. Infact, the caloric density, protein, carbohydrates, and fat in breastmilk changes with the growth of the baby in order to meet the nutritional needs of the baby, unlike formula. Breastmilk is also uncontaminated by bacteria and is easier for the infant's stomach to digest. Infants who have been breast fed for at least eight months have reduced risks for:

* childhood cancers
* diarrheal diseases
* respiratory illness
* ear infections
* bacterial infections
* diabetes
* infant botulism
* Crohn's disease
* ulceratius colitis
* obesity
* SIDS
* cavities

"Breast is best," not only because it is healthier for the baby but also because it has benefits for the mother as well. Nursing mothers enjoy a reduced risk for both breast and ovarian cancer, osteoporosis, and weight loss. It has also been proven that mothers who breastfeed have an increase in confidence and ability in caring for their infant.

Other benefits of breastfeeding include convience and cost. Unlike formula, breastmilk is free! Parents who choose to formula feed their child spend an average of $800 per year, per baby on formula alone, not including the cost of bottles. Breastfeeding also decreases production of hazardous waste such as plastic bottles and rubber nipples, and it lowers health insurance premiums for everyone due to healthier babies.

Many women choose not to brestfeed because they say it hurts or their baby is not eating enough. The truth is that the breast naturally creates more than enough for the size of the infant's stomach. Most problems arise becuase mothers have not been taught how to show their babies how to latch on correctly. When the baby is latched on correctly, the nipple is usually far back in the infant's mounth and should cause no pain. When breastfeeding it is important that the infant not have any other fluids other than breastmilk, even water. Other fluids, objects like pacifiers, and even just one bottle of formula can lead to the "distraction" of the infant from breastfeeding and make it harder for the mother and the infant to breastfeed.

sona

Let me begin by saying that you will be reading a SONA reaction from a loyal Noynoy Aquino supporter. However, this does not mean that I will be singing kumbaya with my President at all times – just because. Having said that, I will try to be fair with Gloria Arroyo (Can you imagine me saying that? I must be going nuts!) By saying that the findings would have been more believable if it was conducted by a third-party and/or independent auditors and I’m certainly not referring to the Commission on Audit because I’m really confused what their role is, given the unrelenting news on graft and corruption. It would probably serve the nation best, to have each department be audited by independent auditors.

Now, let me start by saying that for all the bruhaness of Gloria Arroyo, it is shocking to finally find out, that she has no balls after all, to face the sitting president just like what educated leaders in the west does. So much for respect, for we know who does not deserve one. If indeed Noynoy Aquino’s numbers were erroneous, she could have offered a rebuttal right after the speech, similar to what is being practiced in the United States after every State of the Union Address by the sitting President, where in a rebuttal will be issued by the other party to counter whatever charges or claims unpalatable to the opposition. But here, all that Gloria Arroyo can do is fly her equally [insert word here] husband to Hong Kong.

Blame the teasers for there is nothing memorable in the speech anymore. It doesn’t have the umpt! or the “I have a dream” inspiration or persuasion. In my opinion, our President made a mistake by discussing to the media the meat of his speech. It would have been more dramatic and piercing to see Gloria Arroyo at the Plenary Hall while he was delivering his punches. We love telenovelas, don’t we?
